Week 1 Fantasy Recap

Week 1 of NFL football is in the books and it definitely lived up to the hype. It seemed like every 15 minutes, another receiver was catching a 60 yard touchdown bomb and there was no shortage of high scoring games, although many of these were blowouts. I'm sure this made for great fantasy weeks for a lot of teams, but unfortunately, I lost in all three of my leagues. I mean, come on man! I spent so much time doing my homework on literally everyone who could possibly be fantasy relevant only to see the Titans obliterate my defense, Joe Mixon, Mike Evans, Sony Michel, Jared Goff and a bunch of other top tier guys absolutely dud, and play against a guy that scored 180 points. Just an unlucky week. In this post, I'm going to go into each of my starting players' performances from Week 1 in my friends' league and see what it means for their future outlook. In future posts, hopefully weekly, I'm going to be talking about all sorts of things, so read all of them if you can!

Jared Goff was extremely underwhelming in his season debut

Jared Goff (189 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) - I sure didn't see this one coming. I had Dak Prescott on my bench, who only tossed over twice as many yards, four times as many touchdowns, and infinite times less interceptions. I mean, come on Jared, you just got a huge extension and play on one of the best teams in football, and this is how you play for me. Playing Goff this week wasn't the reason I lost, but it's a huge reason. I think its safe to say Dak is locked into my lineup next week though.

Alvin Kamara only added to his argument that he is one of the league's most dynamic running backs

Alvin Kamara (97 rush yards, 7 catches, 72 receiving yards) - By the time Alvin played, I was down by like 60 and had absolutely no chance of winning, so I didn't really care about the game. His stat line looks solid, but watching him play was a whole other experience. I mean, the guy is an absolute beast and refuses to be tackled until 3 guys are over him. He didn't reach the endzone this game, but based on the last two years, that will surely change soon. I had some doubts with Kamara, but he proved that he is a no-brainer top 3 running back this year.

Sony Michel had a bad game, but he should be able to turn it around against the league-worst Dolphins next week

Sony Michel (14 rush yards) - Yep, I thought I read that wrong the first time too. I've seem a lot of bad rushing performances, but I haven't seen too many where a guy averaged less than a yard per carry on 15 carries on the best offense in football. As a Patriots fan, I'm fired up to see how dominant Tom Brady and the Pats are going to be this season and watch my favorite team score 200 against the Dolphins next week. As a Sony Michel owner, though, I'm pretty pissed and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Mike Evans and the Bucs aerial attack did not live up to the hype this week

Mike Evans (2 catches, 28 yards) - Another dud! I guess fantasy football did not want to be kind to me this week. In Mike's defense, he was sick for the game and I was warned by numerous notification and friends of his illness. I guess it was my fault for playing him, but when you have a guy who's quietly one of the most dominant and consistent receivers in football, you expect more. I'm definitely not panicking over Mike Evans, but I am more than a little concerned about the pick machine Jameis Winston throwing him the ball.

Julian Edelman gave fantasy owners exactly what they expected from him and we should not expect that to change anytime soon

Julian Edelman (6 catches, 83 yards) - This is basically exactly what people have come to expect with Julian Edelman. He gets his targets. He gets his catches. He gets his yards. He doesn't get his touchdowns. I can't be complaining because this is exactly what I spent a late fourth rounder for and he delivered. Even with Antonio Brown coming in next week and will surely get his share of targets, I simply cannot see Edelman, Brady's most reliable receiver by far, dropping below 8-10 targets per game.

George Kittle had a quiet game, but bigger games are surely ahead

George Kittle (8 catches, 54 yards) - Yardage wise, this is definitely not what people have come to expect from the single season tight end yardage record holder. But when you look a little closer in, you will see how dominant Kittle was this game. 10 targets, 8 catches and 2 touchdowns negated by penalties show Kittle's elite upside and tell me that monster games are sure to come. This week wasn't a bad performance, but I'm definitely expecting Kittle to return and even exceed his early third round ADP.

Offseason addition Tevin Coleman suffered an ankle injury and will be out for the foreseeable future

Tevin Coleman (23 rush yards, 2 catches, 33 receiving yards) - When it rains, it pours. Another dud! Tevin has an excuse though, as he got a high ankle sprain early in the game. His play was promising after racking up carries and yardage, but he is at risk to miss a lot of time. Thankfully, I have Matt Breida on the bench and ready to soak up all of the Niners backfield touches. The only problem with Breida is he is a human injury machine.

Week one was obviously not one of my finest weeks (I didn't even cross 80 points in a half PPR!), but I think a lot of the guys on my team can turn it around. Guys like Mike Evans and Sony Michel just had bad games and while Jared Goff and Tevin Coleman turned in dud games, I have guys on my bench ready to go in and score some points for me. At least I win the projected points battle in our league this week!
