Week 5 Fantasy Recap

Another crazy week in the NFL! In this post, I'm going to review the player performances of another team that I manage, where I lost by a whole 0.68 points (135.2-135.88). A super tough loss, but after scoring the fourth most points in the league, I'm still pumped with the team.

Chris Carson (27 Carries, 118 Yards, 1 Rec TD) - After his fumble bonanza, Chris Carson has regained his momentum big time. Yes, he's a talented running back, but I don't care if my running back runs a 6 second 40 if they're getting 27 carries. I mean, those are numbers fantasy owners dream about. I have no problem viewing Carson as a RB1 with his insane volume and high efficiency and even with Rashaad Penny taking some touches, there's more than enough to make Penny fantasy relevant and keep Carson as an elite back.

Patrick Mahomes (321 Pass Yards, 1 Pass TD) - After an absolute blazing start to the season with 10 pass touchdowns in the first 3 weeks, Pat Mahomes has certainly cooled down with only 1 touchdown in the last two (although that one touchdown was something special). To put that into perspective, he had 4 times as many touchdowns in the 2nd quarter against the Raiders than he has in the last 2 weeks. I'm not worrying at all, as he has been playing shorthand. With Tyreek Hill expected to be back this week, expect the deep balls to come rolling in. A potential shootout against the red hot Deshaun Watson and Houston Texans has shootout written all over it and has all the ingredients for a signature Pat Mahomes blowup.

Julian Edelman (8 Catches, 110 Yards, 1 TD) - This guy won't post a 200 yard 3 touchdown week like Amari Cooper or Will Fuller, but he also won't have dud games mixed in like those guys either. With the GOAT throwing him the ball, Edelman is as reliable as they get for a fantasy receiver in any format. Although he has a lower ceiling than a lot of receivers in his range, his floor is as high as any and I can't see that changing against the hapless Giants tonight. However, in a potential mega-blowout, the targets might be a little lower than typical numbers.

Alshon Jeffrey (8 Catches, 68 Yards) - Not the best guy to be my WR2, but he posted a decent week for fantasy owners. With so many mouths to feed in Philly, nobody except Zach Ertz gets the volume to become a fantasy stud and that doesn't look like it will change in the near future. Guys like Jeffrey, Jordan Howard, and Miles Sanders will all have good weeks, but are extremely touchdown dependent. Don't shy away from Jeffrey too much, though, as he has a nose for the end zone.

Ezekiel Elliott (12 Carries, 62 Yards, 1 TD, 2 Catches) - Every Zeke fantasy owner is waiting for the blowup game and after 5 weeks, that hasn't happened yet. However, Zeke has posted solid numbers in each game. While the carry numbers were down for Zeke with the Cowboys being down for nearly the entire game, they will surely make their way back up against the winless Jets. I think this is the game that Zeke feasts with 25+ carries and a signature rushing total that has made him the two time rushing champion. Despite the low numbers, I can't see Zeke as anything but a top 3 running back this week.

Joe Mixon (19 Carries, 93 yards, 1 Catch) - Let me get this straight. Joe Mixon is a super talented running back. But at the end of the day, the Bengals SUCK. He has been a massive disappointment to fantasy owners who picked him up in the second round and is yet to hit 100 rushing yards on the season despite the high volume. The receiving game, offensive line, and offense as a whole isn't there for Mixon and I can't see him breaking out in a big way unless some major changes are made. He's startable for his relatively high floor, but don't expect big numbers.

George Kittle (6 Catches, 70 Yards, 1 TD) - It had to happen sometime. George Kittle was among the league leaders in Red Zone targets and it was about time that he picked up his first touchdown on the season. Kittle posted a solid game, but something tells me that bigger games are ahead for the superstar tight end. Kittle is just a big play away from a blowup week and has top-3 tight end written all over him. In other words, don't bench him.
